It is almost summer – sun is shining and the air is super warm! It is high time for something bright and radiant as the sun itself but at the same time light and cooling as a fresh breeze.

Today we’d like to tell you about Tourmaline.

Tourmaline is considered a semi-precious stone. Its beauty lies in the fact that it comes in a wide variety of colors. Tourmaline stones originate on Sri Lanka. The name itself comes from the Sinhalese word ‘Turmali’ which is a general name for gemstones.

It was first introduced to Europe in the 17th century by the Dutch East India Company. Today this gemstone is mostly mined in Brazil and African countries.

Tourmaline comes in several species. Brownish-black and black stones are known as Schorls; dark yellow to brown are Dravites. There are also tourmalines from the Italian island of Elba that can be red and pink, blue and blueish-green, and even colorless. All colors of tourmaline, especially multicolored gemstones are used in jewelry making.

Brazil has produced the World’s largest tourmaline measuring 36.44 x 33.75 x 21.85 mm (1.43 x 1.33 x 0.86 in) and weighing 191.87 carats. It is included in the Guiness Book of Records. It has a blueish-green color and flawless oval shape.
