Known from the ancient times, Sapphire is one of the four most expensive gemstones in the world. It usually comes from Burma, Sri Lanka and Australia. Kashmir sapphires of bright blue color are said to be the most beautiful but very scarce. Gemstones from Montana State are small (not exceeding 1 ct) but have a rare steel shade in them.

One of the biggest polished sapphires in the world is Indian Star. This star-shaped gemstone weighing 563 ct is exhibited in New York Museum of Natural History.
